2016 Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson announced Tuesday afternoon that he is suspending his campaign after several of his Iowa staffers were involved in a car accident.

The news was first reported by WCIV-TV reporter Bill Burr, who tweeted:

The crash happened around 11:00 am local time, when three volunteers and an employee were traveling in a van that hit a patch of ice and flipped on its side. It was then struck by another vehicle.

All four of the Carson workers in the vehicle were hospitalized, and one of the volunteers was flown to the trauma center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. The retired neurosurgeon flew to Omaha, where the man was in “grave condition” at the time.

Later that night, the man, identified as 25-year-old Braden Joplin, passed away.
