Donald Rumsfeld Says What We’re All Thinking in Letter to the IRS

Each year around this time, former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld pens a letter to the IRS, stating that thanks to America’s massive, 72,000+ page tax code he has no idea whether his taxes are accurate:

Most of us can relate to Mr. Rumsfeld’s situation. The U.S. tax code is more than 146 times larger than it was just 75 years ago. It has become so unnecessarily complex and convoluted that it is pretty much impossible to know everything that’s in it.

And it’s a perfect example of how big government leads to confusion, mistakes and corruption. Bureaucratic programs (and bureaucracies themselves) must be limited in size in order to remain efficient and kept from getting too much power.

The U.S. tax code represents one program that definitely needs to go on a diet.
