This is one of those stories you definitely don’t want to address until there has been some serious double-checking. Apparently, it is true: DHS and other federal agencies have snatched up 1.6 billion rounds of ammo.
The AP has verified that the federal government intends to buy 1.6 billion rounds over the next four or five years. The news agency suggests that it’s all an innocuous attempt for the most reckless spending administration in U.S. history to lower its purchase prices for the rounds necessary for shooting ranges and training exercises.
Dixon [spokeswoman for the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, GA] said one of the contracts would allow Homeland Security to buy up to 750 million rounds of ammunition over the next five years for its training facilities. The rounds are used for basic and advanced law enforcement training for federal law enforcement agencies under the department’s umbrella. The facilities also offer firearms training to tens of thousands of federal law enforcement officers. More than 90 federal agencies and 70,000 agents and officers used the department’s training center last year.
The rest of the 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition would be purchased by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the federal government’s second largest criminal investigative agency.
ICE’s ammunition requests in the last year included:
-450 million rounds of .40-caliber duty ammunition
-40 million rounds of rifle ammunition a year for as many as five years, for a total bullet-buy of 200 million rounds
-176,000 rifle rounds on a separate contract
-25,000 blank rounds
Just for humor’s sake, during the peak of the Iraq war, American troops were firing around 5.5 million rounds per month. At that rate, the DHS is now prepared for a 24-year Iraq war.
As pointed out elsewhere, Barack Obama has very seriously, but unintentionally become the best salesman for guns and ammunition in U.S. history. Check out Mark Levin’s commentary on the issue in the video above…
