CNN “reporter” and “anchor” Tom Foreman has written President Barack Obama every day since his first inauguration — all 1463 days. The intrepid journalist of the vaunted “fourth branch of government” congratulated Obama twice and even implored him in his first letter to “call when you can.” Somebody’s got a man-crush!

Foreman’s “last letter” (assuming he doesn’t belt another one out over tissues and Haagen-Dazs) is posted below:

Inauguration Day will signal the culmination of an effort I launched on January 20, 2009, to write a letter to the White House every single day of Barack Obama’s first term.

And I do mean every day. Weekends, holidays, when he was on vacation, and when I was on vacation. I wrote in my office, at home, in moving airplanes, cars, trains and even while running through the woods. I wrote early in the morning, in the middle of the day and late at night.

I wrote about things that were important, like unemployment, Afghanistan and women’s rights. I also wrote about things that were trivial, like sports, favorite foods and my yearly battle with Christmas lights.

The tally: 1,460 letters, well over a half-million words, or enough to fill about seven novels. Laid out as one line of text, these letters would stretch almost 3½ miles or considerably longer than the inaugural parade route.

I did not intend to get in this deep.

Foreman assures his readers that this was all just a big joke. But whether it was narcissism or the president’s Justin Bieber-like effect on the media that drove this CNN “reporter” and “anchor” to write 1463 letters to the president is besides the point. Activist journalists write about Obama more like they are on the editorial staff of J-14 than as a part of “The Most Trusted Name in News,” regardless of the intention of this pundit’s exercise in self-parody.

When someone’s daily column reads more like a teenage love diary than a critical examination of current events, it might be time to call it quits. Journalists are supposed to hold political figures to account, not fawn all over them in public. Bear this in mind whenever watching CNN: would the media tolerate a Fox News employee writing President Bush or former Governor Sarah Palin every day for 1460 days?
