Panetta Gets His "Mind Straight" With $32,000 Round Trips Home

After a week in which the government has been absolutely attacked for their shocking and disgraceful spending on Latin American Obama family vacation planning, Secret Service hookers, and GSA Las Vegas getaways, we want to add one more thing to that list: Defense Secretary Leon Panetta’s weekly trips home costing taxpayers approximately $32,000 to get his “mind straight.”
Panetta, during a Pentagon briefing Monday, said, “that it does add costs that the taxpayer has to pick up.” Panetta also discovered that water is wet, and the sky is blue. (Just joking, but ARE YOU KIDDING ME?)
Since Panetta has returned home to California 27 times, he has cost American taxpayers almost $850,000. He has reimbursed the Treasury about $630 per trip leaving a deficit (a common word in the Obama Administration) of $31,370 per round trip flight. Panetta claims these flights are necessary “just to get your mind straight and your perspective straight.”
While required to travel on military aircraft so he can remain in constant contact with the White House and other top officials, his travels have been excessive compared to his predecessors. Robert Gates and Donald Rumsfeld spent most weekends in the Washington D.C. area.
Panetta’s work ethic is not in question as he often does work from home in California, but does Team Obama not see these outrageous costs as not only bad for PR in an election year, but absolutely fundamentally ludicrous. Do not demand that taxes be raised for hardworking Americans while this ridiculous spending continues.
